Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe. Kilmainham, Gaol opened in 1796 and is where the main rebellious leaders of the Irish Revolution were incarcerated. The Gaol was closed in1924, with the last remaining prisoner Eammon de Valera being released. Eammon de Valera later became Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and President of Ireland.

Kilmainham Gaol is now one of the leading places to see during your visit to Dublin. Attractions include a major exhibition detailing the political and penal history of the prison and its restoration. Guided tours of the prison which include an audio-visual show, demonstrate how Ireland became an independent nation.
